Let’s get you started!!!
Think about it for a second – why did Thomas Edison have a thousand patents in his lifetime? How was he so obsessed with technology? What drove him into the world of science?
How can one man have so many inventions in a lifetime? If it is that hard to have a patent of your own, how did he do it?
Well, the answer to such questions is not very complex, when you take a splash into the details.
In IBM, we like to say – Everyone can become an inventor. All you need to do is:
Get a hold of your technical skills, i.e., if your passion is AI, start thinking about building something leveraging Machine Learning.
If you are inclined towards cloud, get Redhat certification and in that journey, pause yourself and start thinking about the “What If’s” in different cloud scenarios – be it cloud migration, load balancing or infusing cloud with other known technologies – say blockchain!
It may not be easy to think at first, and that’s where a group of like-minded people can come together and think of confederating ideas in novel ways you had not fathomed!
When brilliant like-minded folks come together, you can spawn not just beautiful relationships but also come up with great ideas to start with! Edison was not a one-man army who could solve the world’s toughest problems, he had an army of people who were as passionate as the driving force himself!
Hence, to get rolling with inventing, you can follow the 3-stage process:
1. Follow a particular subject of interest and correlate that with pragmatic problems from your day-to-day experiences
2. Interact and Network with like-minded people who intend to solve a similar/identical problem. You may find it hard to initiate some conversations but trust me, you’ll get good at it with time!
3. Follow the “KISS” principle - Keep it simple silly! If you cannot explain your idea to a 10-year-old with conviction, it might be harder for you to envision the same.
Once you lather, rinse and repeat such practices with conviction, you would be able to think of having a thousand inventions of your own! So, go and get started! Whenever you tremble, just remember you’re not alone in this journey!
